Silymarin is a polyphenolic flavonoid derived from milk thistle (Silybum marianum).
Silybin is its most active phytochemical and is largely responsible for hepatoprotective benefits of silymarin.
Silymarin acts as a free radical scavenger, along with modulating the enzymes responsible for the development of cellular damage, fibrosis and cirrhosis.
The hypoglycemic potential of silymarin may be due its antioxidant activity by reducing insulin resistance. Silymarin has good effect in the restoration of liver function and also established efficacy in controlling blood glucose level in diabetes patients with liver diseases.
